Gluten-Free Miami Eats

No Wheat? No Problem! 8 Spots for Gluten-Free Eats

If you’ve sworn off gluten because you have a sensitivity, allergy, or intolerance, or simply want to give your gut a break from wheat, barley, or rye, the most common forms of gluten (which are found in pretty much everything these days), don’t fret. You can still eat out with ease. Here we explore 8 places that you can partake in a full meal as well as satisfy your sweet tooth - all without gluten-containing grains.

Dora Gluten Free (Coral Gables)

This is the only fully dedicated gluten-free restaurant in Miami. Get a hamburger and fries for a fulfilling meal or opt for some, croquetas (ham and chicken, and vegan). Finish off your meal with desserts including lemon loaves, key lime pie (also available in dairy-free), cinnamon rolls (also available in guava and Nutella), or some brownies and cookies. They now offer shipping on their gluten-free goodies. @doraglutenfree

Carrot Express (multiple locations)

With an extensive menu of good-for-you eats, from smoothies to bowls to platters, Carrot Express has a number of gluten-free options for those avoiding wheat. Be sure to check out the Shaved Kale Brussels Sprout Salad, Pesto Salmon, Mahi Mahi, BBQ Chicken Platter, or Grilled Chicken Platter for lunch or dinner. @carrotexpress

Coyo Taco (multiple locations)

Don’t get sidelined when your crew hits this local taco institution because of your dietary restrictions. Opt for the new “secret menu” option, the Yogi Bowl (available through the end of April). This delight for gluten-free, vegetarians, and vegans alike, consists of layers of mixed greens, quinoa salad, roasted cauliflower and mushrooms, avocado, pickled red onions, jalapeños, citrus slaw, pico de gallo, and toasted pepitas. You can add salsa and proteins if desired. @coyotaco

Thatch (Midtown)

Pop into the market for a smoothie, a grab-and-go bite, or dine-in for lunch or dinner at this plant-based establishment with an extensive gluten-free offering. From salads to bowls, to gluten-free pad Thai and the not-to-be-missed Shattered Potatoes, you will not leave hungry. For brunch seekers, be sure to try the banana almond pancakes. @thatchmiami

And you can satisfy your gluten-free sweet tooth here:

The Chocolate Chip Bakery (Midtown)

This newcomer to Midtown, offers vegan, gluten-, soy-, refined sugar-,GMO-free cookies, brownies and baked goods that will frankly blow your mind. We stopped in to purchase one of everything and we simply couldn’t choose a favorite from the selection cookies, banana bread, and a light and fluffy sweet potato bun. We were already pre-caffeinated when we dropped in, so we passed on the iced latte, but we’ll be back as they looked just as good as the baked goods.  @thechocolatechipbakery

Bunnie Cakes (Doral)

This cupcake mainstay that just moved their operations to Doral is the OG in vegan and gluten-free cupcake and cakes. You can stop in (or opt for delivery) to choose from a variety of flavors including some cookies and cream, red velvet, funfetti, key lime, dulce no leche, coconut, and more. Bunnie Cakes can also customize your order for cupcakes, cakes, and mini cakes all to be gluten -free. @msbunniecakes

Purely Baked By Sarah (delivery)

If you’re a fan of the Kardashians, you may have seen their obsession with olive oil cakes and cupcakes. Now you can get your very own from this local baker, who sells all organic, dairy-free, gluten-free and parve, cakes in a selection of flavors like original olive oil, chocolate, chocolate chip, guava (with coconut or without), and lemon poppy seed (with lemon glaze on top). Place your order via Instagram DM and choose to pick up your goods at the Fresh Market Parking lot in Aventura or opt for delivery. @purelybakedbysarah

The Oats Guy (delivery)

When we saw The Oats Guy’s stunning creations pop-up on our Instagram, we thought it was another case of ‘looks good, but can’t eat’ situation. Then we learned that these donuts can all be made gluten-free (as well as vegan and sugar-free if you’re so inclined) we dropped a DM and eagerly checked out the weekly menu of these oatmeal rings. We received a quick reply via a very accommodating baker and our donuts were delivered with care. They taste more cake-y than fried donuts (which is fine by us because we actually don’t like fried dough) and each creation looked (and tasted) better than the next. You can tell and taste there is a lot of love that goes into making these by the attention to detail each ring has. @theoatsguy

Stretch Zone South Florida

Stretch Yourself to Better Health & Performance

2020 took a toll on many things including the way in which we moved our bodies. Working from home led to hours of sitting at sometimes unconventional desks (hello, dining room table) and with gyms closed, we had to rely on at-home workouts. Even if we were able to motivate ourselves to move, our bodies bore the brunt and our muscles were left tight and sore.  Stretching is a crucial step in our performance and skipping it can lead to aches and pains and impaired athleticism and even impaired sleep.

Enter Stretch Zone, an assisted stretching studio dedicated to lengthening your muscles in order to increase your flexibility and range of motion, balance you out, improve your posture, keep you in peak athletic performance, keep injuries at bay, and have you walking taller. And if that isn’t enough, regular stretching can also reduce stress.

With 20+ locations in South Florida alone, we checked out the Coral Gables location (3138 Ponce de Leon Blvd) for their free assessment, which is offered to all first-time guests.

Even with yoga 4-5 a week, we were surprised how much we needed this session and learned that Stretch Zone is designed to help functional flexibility.

Before getting started you’ll discuss with your Stretch Therapist what type of exercise(s) you do, a little about your lifestyle and if there is any area that you’d like to work on. For us, it was our lower back and hamstrings (we may be guilty of not stretching after running).

Next you lie down on a bed (sanitized before and after each client) where all the stretching is done. There is a belt/strap that goes over your waist to hold you in place when things get twisty; all of Stretch Zone’s equipment is patented.

Your Stretch Therapist will guide you through a series of exercises to get a baseline of how your body moves and how tight you are before creating a program customized for your body and your goals.

As you work through the stretches, your Stretch Therapist will ask you to share, on a scale of 1-10, how difficult the movement is for you. You hold each stretch for a few seconds and go through each exercise three times, with the goal of going deeper each stretch. During our session, we worked our anterior and posterior chain of muscles as balance is key in stretching… and life.

By the time we were done, our lower back pain was eased, we felt lighter and taller, and became firm believers that regular Stretch Zone sessions are the perfect addition for anyone’s wellness routine.

Jill Black Microcurrent Facial

A Workout For Your Face: Jill Black’s Holistic Microcurrent Facial

While we are firm believers of it’s what's inside that matters, we also feel that there is nothing wrong with enhancing your exterior in whichever way you see fit to make you feel your best. So when we learned that Jill Black, a holistic health practitioner, microcurrent facialist, and energy healer, relocated from New York, we booked an appointment for a microcurrent facialist to see what all the buzz was about.

Upon meeting Jill in her Wynwood location, which is flood with natural light, we got situated, and then she began to clean our face with micellar water. Then she applied a gel that was a mix of aloe, hyaluronic acid, and peptides, which acts as a conductor for the microcurrent wands. After massaging the gel into our face and chest, Jill explained that she will do three passes with the wands over our face and décolleté, each pass with a stronger pulse of microcurrent that she ensured we wouldn’t even feel.

Micro-current stimulates your skin to make its own fibroblasts of collagen and elastin, and the small pulses of microcurrents simultaneously exercise the muscles of the face, resulting in a tighter more lifted appearance. It also helps to restore the convexities of the face, counteracting the sagging, drooping muscles, and wrinkles that occur when we age. Basically, it fills out your face in the best possible way.

If the thoughts of small electrical pulses scare you, don’t fear, you will not feel a thing, other than a soothing wand or gentle massage. The entire experience was super relaxing. If we weren’t so busy chatting Jill’s ear off about our shared passion for holistic lifestyle as well as her other service that intrigues us like muscle testing, we could have fallen asleep.

When we were finished we were beyond thrilled with the results. Our skin was tight, toned, and lifted and remained in this state for a few days. For the best results, Jill recommends five treatments, one per week, and then once a month for maintenance. Single sessions are $250 and a package of five is $1200.

A few pointers before you book: drink a lot of water the day before as it helps the conduction of electricity and enhances the treatment by allowing your glow to linger longer. Also, if you’ve recently had Botox or fillers, you need to wait two weeks before you book your appointment.

To book your appointment, visit jillblackholistic.com, call (347) 552-7328, email jill@jillblackholistic.com or message her on Instagram @jillblack_holistic.

Phat Buddah Miami

Phat Buddha Launches New Miami Inspired Activewear Collection

One can never have too much athletic wear, especially when it’s seamless, sustainably made,  hugs the body in just the right way, and is universally flattering on different body shapes and sizes. That’s why we’re so excited to hear about Phat Buddah’s newest collection, which not only checks all those boxes but is also inspired by Miami. We were lucky enough to catch up with Phat Buddah Founder and recent Miami resident, Alissa Benishai, who gave us some insight into her new collection and her life.

For those that don’t know Phat Buddha, can you give us a little background on your line of activewear?

Phat Buddha is a globally loved active fashion brand, specializing in seamless and sustainable technology. We created a product that bridges the gap between activewear and everyday fashion. The purpose of developing this brand was to allow myself and others to “get out of our own way.”

As women, our bodies are ever-changing based on stress, post/pre-pregnancy, sleep, exercising, etc. We created seamless fabrication that molds to the body. Phat Buddha is about feeling good from the inside out, not about conforming into a garment.  NO MATTER HER MOVEMENT, #wemovewithyou.

We read that you did a 3-month Bikram intensive training, do you still practice?

Yes, I practice every day. Due to the pandemic restrictions, I started self-practice and incorporated some moves after my streaming Tracy Anderson Method.

You’ve done collaborations with some big fitness industry names like Tracy Anderson. Who is another dream collaborator you would love to work with?

Currently, I am grateful for all my exclusive partnerships because they are in line with Phat Buddha’s mission and have some MAJOR surprises coming up in 2021 extending our range and pushing the athleisure marketplace envelope. I would love to work with Drake. Not only is he reputable, and an inspirational artist, he is a true philanthropist to the Miami community. Expansion and collaboration into Men's wear through OVO would be a dream, and music has always inspired me to move.

You recently moved to Miami and your newest collection is inspired by the Magic City, tell us more about the vibe of "Back To Basics, Miami Edition”?

My new collection is called “Back to Basics, Miami Edition”. The focus is on real women with real bodies, with an affordable price point. On February 8th, 2021, we launched Back to Basics, Miami Edition. The collection is seamless driven, sustainable, price-conscious, and size-inclusive. The collection features simple silhouettes with a fashion-forward flare that embraces YOUR BODY, YOUR MOVEMENT because #WEMOVEWITHYOU. We are spreading our NYC love to the streets of Miami. As was our philosophy in New York, we have named each garment after a street in Miami. We are very thankful to the Miami community for welcoming us with open arms and look forward to what new adventures tomorrow will bring.

A portion of proceeds from online sales is donated to charity. Can you share which ones and how you chose those?

During the last ten months, while working from my family home in Miami, we were able to touch the lives of those that needed a “feel good” moment, be it in their clothing, workouts, IGTV, REELS, videos, podcasts, etc.

Through my contact with my “Phat Buddha” community, I determined that the two biggest challenges brought about by the Pandemic were mental health and food. It was this realization that stirred me to draft a plan, reaching out to influencers, friends, CEO’s in our community and beyond to repost about Feeding America and supporting the JED Foundation

Phat Buddha, as a result, created a movement with the sole purpose of building a brand dedicated to “giving back.” Feeding America because when I walked to the kitchen my father asked me one morning what “kind” of milk I wanted, I had a selection. I had options, thousands of people did not have food. Hundreds of thousands of people were hungry, out of work and schools were closed so lunches were not served to children. The Jed Foundation, because I personally have struggled with mental health challenges that the world was facing at a high rate due to the pandemic.

peanut butter products

6 Peanut Products Packing a Nutritional Punch

If there was a Peanut Butter Anonymous, we’d be a part of the program. No matter the form -  raw, butter, or even powder -  we don’t discriminate. As far as nutrition goes, peanuts pack quite a punch with approximately 7 grams of protein per ounce, making them a great choice when looking for something to keep you satisfied. And while 14 grams of fat per serving might scare some off, most of the fats in peanuts are good fats and will keep your blood sugars low and keep you from getting hangry.

All in the name of research we tested a selection of peanut butter products to deliver our top 6 (narrowing it 5 was just too hard!)

1. Brooklyn Roasting

Coffee and peanut butter don't sound like they’d be a good match, but the folks at Brooklyn Roasting dared to combine the two. The result is a delicious peanut butter infused with fresh roasted Turkish ground single-origin coffee. We tried the Ethiopian Natural Peanut Butter and our taste buds freaked out in the best possible way. This creamy spread has a deliciously nutty flavor combined with coffee and you can taste the most delectable hint of blueberry thanks to the Ethiopian natural processed coffee. https://brooklynroasting.com, @brooklynroasting

2. R.E.D.D. Peanut Butter Protein Bar

With a soft, cookie dough-like texture this bar is packed with superfoods, adaptogenic mushrooms, probiotics, and 10g of plant-based protein, and a perfect peanutty flavor. These bars are chock full of peanuts and are gluten-free, dairy-free, non-GMO and Kosher and  https://www.reddbar.com, @reddbar

3. Catalina Crunch Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal

With zero sugar, non-GMO, grain-free, and 100% vegan, we were shocked by how crunchy, flavorful, and frankly irresistible this cereal is. While we admit we didn’t go for the traditional milk and cereal in a bowl, rather we ate it by the handful or sprinkled on acai bowls, this cereal uses seven plant proteins and fibers that are designed to keep you full longer and promote gut health. And the Catalina Crunch Peanut Butter Cookies, those are a must-try, too! https://us.catalinacrunch.com, @catalinacrunch

4. Quinn Peanut Butter Filled Pretzel Nuggets

These gluten-free, crunchy peanut butter-filled pretzels have been a go-to snack of ours for some time now. The little pillow-looking pretzels have a crunchy exterior with creamy peanut butter filling inside, and use whole grain sorghum, an ancient whole grain that is naturally gluten-free and better for the environment.  https://www.quinnsnacks.com, @quinnsnacks

5. Organic PBfit Peanut Butter Powder

If you’re like us and have a hard time putting the spoon down and walking away from the jar, then this powder formula gives you goodness without the guilt. With just three ingredients including gently pressed roasted peanuts, coconut palm sugar, and a pinch of salt, it has 87% less fat and ⅓ the calories of traditional peanut butter. Just add water and mix to get a creamy texture that you won’t want to put down. https://pbfit.com, @betterbodyfoods

6. Gr8nola Peanut Butter Granola

When two of our favorite snacks, peanut butter and granola, collide AND give back, we consider that a major win. That’s why we are fans of this woman-owned BIPOC superfood granola brand, who has partnered with Girl Up, a United Nations Foundation initiative uniting girls to change the world. 8% of all Peanut Butter sales will be donated to Girl Up. Five girl leaders were chosen to work alongside gr8nola’s founder Erica Liu Williams to bring this flavor to market - from ideation to launch. Through this partnership, Gr8nola strives to inspire young women to achieve gr8ness by giving these girls real-world entrepreneurial experience, while supporting Girl Up's mission to achieve gender equality worldwide. https://www.gr8nola.com, @gr8nola

National Keto Day January 5

10 Tasty Snacks to Celebrate National Keto Day

There are many different diets, or as we prefer to say ‘ways of eating.’ Truth be told, we’ve tried A LOT of them in a quest to discover what works best for our own body. And that’s the key, not every style of eating is for everyone i.e. there is no one size fits all when it comes to food.  Whether it be based on your lifestyle, workouts, dietary restrictions, level of commitment, or other factors, finding what works for YOU, not your friends, not your partner, not your sister’s-cousin’s-co-worker’s-aunt, but you.

With all that said, if you’re interested in trying the Keto Diet, you can kick it off on National Keto Day, which is January 5. The Keto Diet principles are based on a low carb, low sugar, high fat, moderate protein consumption. There are plenty of keto calculators online that can help you figure out your ratios, if interested. We’ve dabbled in Keto and found success with it. There are many different ways to “do keto”, but we prefer to keep it ‘clean’ focusing on high-quality organic, grass-fed meats, wild, fatty fish like salmon and sardines (yes, sardines!),  healthy oils, nuts and seeds, and getting our carbohydrates and fiber from lots and lots of low-starch veggies and leafy greens. Eating a plate of bacon, greasy burger, and creamer-laden coffee, while yes, still Keto, yet violates our personal health ideology. But again, if that works for you, you do you!

While eating whole fresh foods is always our goal no matter what way of eating we’re adhering to, let’s be honest, snack attacks hit. In honor of National Keto Day, we’re sharing some of our favorite keto-friendly snacks and treats that are keto-compliment and downright delightful.

Savory

Prevail Jerky - The combination of protein and fat will keep you full so when hunger strikes, grab a bag of PREVAIL Jerky, which we love because it is devoid of harmful additives like soy, preservatives, sugar, nitrates, and MSG.  Using premium 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef, it is gently sweetened with coconut sugar making it Paleo-certified, Keto-certified. Plut it is gluten-free and Celiac Certified, non-GMO, with no added antibiotics, no added hormones, no added nitrates or preservatives. They have unique flavors to choose from too, like Lemongrass and Umami. https://prevailjerky.com/ @prevailjerky

Fat Snax - Having a hard time giving up your cheesy cracker addiction? No problem. Simply swap them for Fat Snax, low carb crackers made from a base of almond flour, coconut flour, and butter. They are available in three flavors - Original, Cheddar, and Everything (But the Carbs!), are gluten-free and do not contain artificial ingredients, preservatives, or sweeteners. https://fatsnax.com, @eatfatsnax

Biena - We’re already a huge fan of Biena’s Chickpea snacks so when we found out about their new Biena Keto Puffs we had to give them a try. These new puffs are the first plant-based Keto Puff on the market, made from chickpeas and lentils and  5 grams of plant protein per serving. They have a satisfying crunch and texture but don’t expect a cheesy flavor like other artificially, toxic orange ones on the market, rather a mild and pleasing flavor. BienaSnacks.com  @beinasnacks

Daily Nuts & Fruit - We’ve never met a nut we didn’t like (some might say it’s an addiction), so grabbing a handful of roasted almonds has always been our go-to. What we love at these 72 hour Just Roasted Almonds is that they dry roast the almonds in small batches, steam roasted, which means no chemical processing once they receive your order, so they are as fresh as possible. Place your order, and they get to roasting and ship them to you all within 72 hours so you can get snacking. https://dailynutsandfruits.com  @dailynutsandfruits

Lemonette - If you’re looking to dress up your veggies try Lemonette’s refreshing lemon-based gourmet salad dressing. These lemon-based alternatives to vinegar-, cream-, or soy-based dressings, Lemonette Mediterranean-inspired dressings are vinegar-free, gluten and dairy-free, vegan, non-GMO Project Verified, and contain no sugar (or sweeteners of any kind), no artificial colors or preservatives, and no MSG’s. Choose from four flavors including Mediterranean Herb, Italian Herb, Lemon Garlic, and Zesty Cumin, which can be used on warm or cold salads, as well as marinades for grilling sauces. https://lemonettedressings.com  @lemonettedressings

Sweet

Lily’s Sweets - If you think that you can’t indulge in chocolate while following a Keto diet, think again. Lily’s Sweets has a line of chocolate that is stevia-sweetened allowing you to get your fix. The company sources non-GMO and gluten-free ingredients harvested through Fair Trade practices and ensures every product is free of refined or processed sugars. From Chocolate Bars to baking essentials, and even dark chocolate peanut butter cups (our favorite), you’re sure to find something that satisfies your sweet tooth. https://lilys.com @lilys_sweets

So Nourished - Granola is our Achilles heel so thankfully we found  So Nourished, which offers low-carb, vegan, gluten-free, grain-free, and sugar-free granola snacks in four delicious flavors, Maple Pecan, Coconut Cashew, and Blueberry Almond. Snack on them out of the bag (our preferred method) or grab a spoon to eat as a cereal because no matter how you eat it, know you’re indulging in a good-for-you treat. https://www.sonourished.com @sonourishedinc

The Cookie Department - As much as we love these cookies, the story behind them is what got us. Founder Akiva Resnikoff had a successful line of functional cookies that contained protein, superfoods, caffeine, probiotics, and antioxidants. However, his wife, who had to adhere to a strict gluten-free and ketogenic diet as a result of traumatic brain injuries, couldn't eat them. So he formulated a line of gluten-free, ketogenic cookies in three irresistible flavors, Champion Chip (chocolate chip), Mint Condition (double chocolate mint), and Cake Walk (birthday cake).  This line is soy-free, GMO-free, corn-free, Allulose free, IMO free, and Kosher certified and have 1 gram of sugar and between 3-4 net carbs, depending on flavor. www.thecookiedepartment.com @cookiedept

Sweet Logic  - Like many, if it’s there we’ll eat it, which is great when it comes to fruits and veggies, but keeping a full cake around the house can be dangerous. Luckily, Sweet Logic offers single-serve Mug Cakes that allow you to exercise some self-control while digging into deliciousness. These keto-friendly mug cake mixes made with coconut and almond flour are gluten and dairy-free, have 1-4g of sugar, no artificial sweeteners or flavors, and are fun and easy to make. Try Triple Chocolate, Carrot Cake, Lemon Poppyseed, Red Velvet Cake, and others. https://eatsweetlogic.com @eatsweetlogic

Tidbits Keto Fun Bites Meringue Cookies - Sometimes you want a light yet sweet sensation and Tidbits Keto Fun Bites Meringue Cookies hit the spot. These sugar-free, lactose-free, gluten-free, soy-free, cholesterol-free, and non-GMO bites available in flavors like Cookies and Cream, Chocolate, Strawberry Mint Chocolate, and more, offer a melt-in-your-mouth delight. https://www.tidbits.fun @tidbitsfunbites

Dry January

5 Non-Alcoholic Alternatives for Dry January

Wondering how to avoid a hangover? Put down the cocktail, stop reaching for the wine and skip the Sangria. It’s a surefire way to not wake up with a pounding headache and feeling sluggish. We know it might sound crazy after the year we had, but why not usher in 2021 focused and feeling your best by making it a dry January.

We turned to Hilary Sheinbaum, Trend journalist, on-air host, lifestyle expert author of just released book,  The Dry Challenge: How to Lose the Booze for Dry January, Sober October, and Any Other Alcohol-Free Month, to learn about the benefits of giving up alcohol for a month (or more). Hilary told us that “some major benefits include saving money, losing weight and evaluating how you use your time (likely in a more productive manner when you aren't tipsy).”

Hilary notes that by not spending money on drinks (hello $20 South Beach cocktails), you can use that money toward paying off debt, or putting it towards something you’ve been working towards like saving for a house, or a dream vacation.

Also, “Alcohol is also full of empty calories. A glass of wine can contain about 125 calories (and it's unlikely you'll be drinking one), so this can certainly derail fitness and diet goals when you are drinking. When you aren't drinking, however, you aren't taking in unnecessary calories, which can ultimately help you lose weight. (Also, hangover foods aren't exactly "good" for you),” says Sheinbaum.

If giving up the sauce seems like a challenge, here are some of Hillary's tips to help make it easier:

  1. Put away the booze. You can hide them, store them with a friend or toss them away -- but, "Out of sight, out of mind" will usually help you avoid alcohol, at least at home.
  2. Recruit a friend to partake in The Dry Challenge with you! Your Sober Month Support Squad can offer help, encouragement and keep you accountable along the way. (And you can do the same for them!)
  3. Try something new! The nonalcoholic beverage industry is booming. Now, more than ever, there are a variety of nonalcoholic beers, wines and spirits to help you sip without a buzz.

Speaking of non-alcoholic alternatives, we found five for you to consider.

Sunwink Herbal Wellness Tonics - These fizzy, refreshing beverages with real ingredients like, whole herbal plants, fresh lemons and mint, provide a delicious and healthy alternative that not only will keep you hydrated, but also help to reduce stress, boost mood, and fight fatigue. https://drinksunwink.com @drinksunwink

Ritual ZeroProof Tequila Alternative - You won’t have to miss your margarita thanks to this tequila alternative. With the flavor, aroma, and bite of tequila, you can mix up your favorite tequila-based libation sans alcohol or calories. https://www.ritualzeroproof.com@ritualzeroproof

Damrak 0.0 Virgin Gin - Handcrafted in the heart of Amsterdam, Damrak Virgin 0.0 is distilled from 10 botanicals, including Valencia & Curacao orange peels, ginger, lavender, cinnamon, and lemon peel. With these gin-inspired flavors you won’t miss your Gin & Tonic.https://www.damrakgin.com @damrakgin

Sipp - Skip the hard seltzer and reach for Sipp, USDA-certified clean soft seltzers, infused with Camu Camu, the world’s most Vitamin C-rich fruit loaded anti-inflammatory compounds. Choose from fruit and herb flavors like Vanilla Spice & Everything Nice, Berry Mint Condition and Sweet Ruby Riot. https://enjoysipp.com  @enjoysipp

101 Cider House - If you’re looking for a natural buzz, open a can of 101 Cider House, juices pressed in small batches and then fermented and aged for 3 months until they evolve into a naturally alcohol and certified probiotic, cold pressed beverage. So while not technically alcohol-free, 101Cider House creates cans of refreshing flavors like Cactus Rose (apples, cactus pear, basil, hibiscus, lemon peel) and Gunpowder Guava(apples, green tea, guava) that are still healthier alternatives. https://101cider.com @101cider

There is a new beauty destination in Brickell, one that gets you glam head-to-toe in 60 minutes flat, under strict safety protocols. At DashBar you receive three treatments of choice all at the same time.

DashBar is an oasis on the second floor of the Brickell Heights building that is an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Before stepping into the elevator you are greeted downstairs for a protocol check. First, hand sanitizer is given, then your temperature is taken, followed by an extensive list of questions regarding your health. This is to ensure the health and safety of the DashBar team as well as your own.

After a quick ride up to the second floor the doors open and we’re pretty sure your mouth will drop at the incredibly chic decor. It’s hard to know where to look first as everything is so eye-catching. From the pink and gold diamond pattern wallpaper, the pink and white striped wall with the words Fast, Casual, Beauty illuminated, the Future Is Female and angel wings neon signs, to floral wall installations, everything screams to be photographed for the ‘gram. Every last detail has been thought of down the pink towels and even the pink caps on the nail polish remover bottles, no detail was overlooked here.

Upon checking in for our services, we were informed that DashBar is equipped with hospital-grade HEPA air filters, that UV-C lights have been installed in the HVAC system along with Aroma360’s innovative AirBioTech360 formula that reintroduces probiotics back into HVAC post electrostatic spraying that occurs each night with hospital-grade disinfectants.

With the modern, busy women in mind, DashBar offers three services at once. Speed and efficiency is kind of our thing so we were excited to check it out. We chose the Blowout, Manicure Pedicure combo and truly felt that like we got the royal treatment with 3 stylists tending you at once. (They are all masked and wearing face shields).

The treatments are done in, yes, you guessed it, pink, patent-pending salon-spa chair, PollyDashBar™, which are incredibly comfortable and allow for the stylists to easily maneuver around each other and from side to side to get from your left hand to your right for the manicure. Additionally, we love that all products used are non-toxic, vegan, cruelty-free, and eco-friendly and they carry products with the safest ingredients.

Blowout services with manicure and pedicure included start at $115, Lash Extension with manicure and pedicure included start at $195, Facial with manicure and pedicure included start at $155. Each service menu has a plethora of upgrades like a reparative foot mask or deep conditioner or you can stick with the Collective options, the basic service, though nothing is basic about it.

So if you’re in need of a pick me up, are pressed for time, or simply don't have the patience to sit for multiple beauty treatments, and want to ensure that you’re in a safe space, dash on over to DashBar.

DashBar is located at 25 SW 9th Street. For appointments, which are required, call 786-633-0336 or visit www.theDashBar.com or @theDashBar.

Magic Mushrooms

5 Mushroom Must-Haves for Magic Health Benefits

Funky, funny fungi. No, we’re not talking about those kinds, though a recent study has shown that magic mushrooms in small doses might help with depression. We’re talking about the kind that you can safely ingest without psychedelic effects, but that are loaded with health benefits.

We turned to Dr. Elizabeth Trattner, Doctor of Chinese and Integrative Medicine, and our go-to for all things health, who shared her mushroom mastery with us well as reasons why we should consider adding mushrooms to our health and beauty routine.

“As we go into winter, cold and flu season and another possible lockdown, one of the best botanicals are the fungus among us. Mushrooms pack a punch for so many reasons. Medicinal mushrooms are a source of many beneficial phytonutrients, minerals, and vitamins in Western countries," says Trattner.

“In recent years they have become extremely popular in the West, so much that now coffee like drinks are made from them and other food and beverage products. They have tremendous efficacy treating diseases while not conflicting with western medicine protocols. Mushrooms have been used in Chinese Medicine for thousands of years before they became popular here. Mushrooms are also prized for their longevity giving properties," Trattner continued.

There are many different types of mushrooms and to find out more about each individual type, check out Dr. Trattner’s post, which breaks them all down. Keep reading for our mushroom must-haves.

Further Food Vanilla Collagen Peptides Plus Beauty Mushrooms - Drop a scoop in your coffee, tea or even into your recipes while cooking to give yourself a boost of beauty and health. Collagen may help strengthen hair, nails, bones, joints and improve gut health, and Tremella mushroom which is loaded with Vitamin D and antioxidants helps nourish skin, brighten complexion and deeply hydrate skin from the inside out. Use code DRELIZ for 15% your order. $29.99, Furtherfood.com, @furtherfood

MUD\WTR, We are self-confessed espresso addicts, but we were willing to swap out of daily coffee beans to try this coffee alternative. While we will admit to being a bit skeptical at first, it was love at first sip. MUD\WTR has 1/7th the caffeine of coffee, yet provides natural energy, focus without the jitters and as for the taste it’s heavenly. The blend of Cacao with Masala Chai,  Turmeric Sea Salt Cinnamon along with four different mushrooms including Lions Mane, Chaga, Reishi, and Cordyceps, brilliantly mixes to deliver a cup of chai with hints of chocolate and cinnamon. And added bonus, the packaging is really smart, and we’re a sucker for that. The 30-day starter kit comes with a 30-serving tin, USB rechargeable frother, free guidebook, free sample of MUD\WTR dairy-free creamer, free stickers. $40.00, https://mudwtr.com/, @drinkmudwtr

We all (should) know by now that keeping our bodies hydrated is essential, but if you’re struggling to get in your ounces, try adding in  BareOrganics Energy Superfood Water Enhancer. This unique blend includes Organic Cordyceps Mushroom along with other adaptogens like Organic Ashwagandha, Organic Maca, Organic Siberian Ginseng, combined with a proprietary green boost bend of Organic Japanese Matcha, Organic Green Bean Coffee Extract and more. $4.99 / 5 pack, https://bareorganics.com, @bareorganicssuperfoods

Mushroom scented cologne? Yup! It exists and it's shockingly delightful. Demeter, the scent makers that have a library of more than 300 different fragrances inspired by everyday objects and experiences, delivers a fragrance that is earthy yet sweet, and we’re into it. $2.40 - $24.00, https://demeterfragrance.com, @demeterceo

No need to worry about smelling like a funky fungus when using Each & Every Geranium & Snow Mushroom Natural Deodorant, a natural, aluminum and baking soda-free (also free of all other ingredients that can harm the body) deodorant that is infused with Snow Mushroom extract, which works to keep underarm skin nurtured. This unisex scent marries sweet and floral top notes with warm, woody base notes to create a fresh herbaceous scent. $15.00, EachandEvery.com, @eachandevery

'Tis The Season. 4 Tips on Healthy Holiday Eating

The holidays are upon us and even though they might look a bit different this year, the fact is, the holidays tend to be a time when people start to slack off on their healthy eating habits. We are all for everything in moderation and a ’treat yo self’ mentality, but there are ways to be mindful about indulging. That one cocktail (or two) here, the extra slice of pie here, the missed workout, all can play into holiday weight gain.

We turned to Cristie Besu, Founder of Eat Me Guilt Free and Certified Sports Nutritionist who shares her tips on how to still take part in your favorite holiday treats yet stay the course over the next few months.

Tip #1

Find and use “better for you” versions of your favorite foods.  Stuffing is a common holiday favorite and you can make a high protein, low carb version that is still delicious and satisfying using Eat Me Guilt Free Protein Bread (check out Eat Me Guilt Free's recommended stuffing recipe here)

Tip #2

As we increase our calories and the pandemic continues to keep us distant for our close friends and family, it is a good time to organize #wfh workouts that are outdoors with them. It helps us stay close to those we want to see over the holidays without engaging in indoor activities that are more difficult to distance yourself socially at.  AND you burn off all the extra calories you are consuming.

Tip #3

Indulge in holiday wine spritzers vs wine at holiday gatherings.  You use 50% wine and 50% club soda and, voila, your wine now has half of the calories. If you enjoy red wines, pinot noir works well and most whites are a perfect fit.

Tip #4

Serve your holiday meals with measuring cups vs a large spoon.  Using the 1 cup measuring cup helps keep your portions in check and your calorie intake within what you normally consume.

The holidays are here and even though they look a bit different this year, the fact is, the holidays tend to be a time when people start to slack off on their healthy eating habits.

6 Products to Help You Battle Blue Light

Who remembers the childhood game, Red Light, Green Light, Go? When it comes to blue light, however, it would be a no. Most of us know that we should be protecting ourselves from UVA/UVB rays which have been proven to contribute to skin cancer, but there is a lesser-known ultraviolet light, blue light, that can have detrimental effects on your body and we are all being exposed, now more than ever.

Blue light is the light that emits from our devices - computer screens, phones, tablets, even energy-efficient light bulbs - and it can have negative effects on our vision, skin, moods, sleep, hormones, and weight.

Blue light is stimulating, which can be helpful during waking hours, however, when over exposed, especially after sundown, it throws off our circadian rhythm as it fools our brain into thinking that it’s still daylight. This messes with our melatonin production and leads to restless sleep, which affects our bodies in more ways than one. Additionally all that screen time causes our eyes to strain and even damage our skin. So even if you’re working from home, apply your sunscreen.

So how do you battle blue light? We found six products for the job.

Protect Your Eyes

When you’re in front of a screen protect your eyes with Barner Blue Light Blocking glasses that have lenses with a coating specially developed for people who spend a lot of time indoors and are exposed to the blue-violet and LED light of digital devices. These super stylish glasses, with high quality, organic CR39 lenses block 40% of the blue light on the 430-450nm spectrum and 100% of the blue light at 410nm, are one of our top picks. $72.00, https://barnerbrand.com, and on Instagram (@barnerbrand).

While we personally won’t sit down in front of our computer without Blue Light blocking glasses, if you don’t feel like rocking the “four-eyes” look, there are a number of vitamins to enhance your eye health. Radio Foresight is a proprietary blend of nootropics and vitamins crafted to not only protect your eyes from blue light but also boost your energy levels, concentration, alertness, cognitive function and focus. Improving mental clarity while helping to keep your eyesight and mind sharp as a tack, we’re here for that! $59.99, https://turnonyourradio.com, and on Instagram (@turnonyourradio).

For those with children, their little eyes are seeing an abundance of blue light thanks to virtual school and increased screen time during the pandemic. Thankfully, Viteyes.com recently released a version of their popular Blue Light Defender+ for children, Blue Light Defender Kids, which contains Lutein & Zeaxanthin to naturally filter blue light and AstaReal® astaxanthin to combat tired eyes. These berry soft chews are for ages 4 and older. $21.95, https://www.viteyes.com, and on Instagram (@viteyes).

Protect Your Skin

If applying daily sunscreen is not already part of your daily skincare routine, your Florida card should be revoked. What might surprise you is that even if you’re working from home and inside most of the day, you still need protection. Sun can filter through windows and now you know that blue light can damage your skin you’re going to want to apply daily.

We discovered a simple solution to add in SPF and block blue light in Coola Full Spectrum 360° Sun Silk Drops Organic Face Sunscreen SPF 30. A few drops of this organic sun silk can be added to your favorite moisturizer or foundation, or use on its own and allow the proprietary blend of antioxidants and specially harvested plant-cell cultures to help lessen your exposure. $46.00, https://coola.com, and on Instagram (@coola).

Another skin protector that we recommend is The Better Skin Co.'s Super Shield Anti-Pollution Serum, a liquid defense system, which is designed to fight this and other silent aggressors while nourishing the skin with ingredients like Turmeric, Eggplant, Aloe, Henna, and Pearl Powder. $38.00, TheBetterskinCo.com, and Amazon.com. Follow on Instagram (@betterskinco).

You can battle skin-damaging wavelengths by applying makeup with SPF, like Bobbi Brown Skin Long-Wear Fluid Powder Foundation SPF 20. This liquid-to-powder foundation reveals a soft-matte finish. We especially love this SPF formula as it not only offers sun and blue light protection (though we still recommend wearing sunscreen), but it is also sweat resistant, transfer-resistant, and non-acnegenic aka won’t contribute to maskne. $40.00, https://www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com, and on Instagram (@bobbibrown).

Blue light is the light that emits from our devices. So how do you battle blue light? We found six products for the job.

Get Sweaty with Sweaty Girl and Support Breast Cancer Awareness

Sweat is sexy and Karla Perez, Founder of Sweaty Girl Apparel agrees. Her line of activewear, based right here in South Florida, is designed to help women look their best while working out and doing something healthy for themselves.

Beyond the activewear, which we’ll delve into in a bit, Karla Perez, set out to create an activewear collection to meet the demands of her active lifestyle, that she felt wasn’t being met on the market. She was looking for stylish activewear that was functional for all fitness types and sports.

“Most of the cute clothes just didn’t provide the support needed for the high-intensity workouts I was doing. Oftentimes, I would do a CrossFit class and then cool down with Yoga. Well, I don’t have to tell you what kind of outfit is appropriate for both types of classes," said Perez. "So, out of my frustration with the quality, price, and functionality of the clothes I was buying, Sweaty Girl was born!”

However, in 2018, everything came to a halt when she was diagnosed with bi-lateral breast cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment and has been cancer-free since 2019. And Sweaty Girl is also thriving.

Sweaty Girl is inspired by the vibrant colors and scene of Miami and brings a dose of bright, bold, and colorful fabrics and designs. One of the most favored features of the collection is the combination of compression fabrics from Columbia and Brazil. They provide just enough to hold you in, yet are soft enough for all-day wear. The line includes tops (sports bras, tanks, tees), bottoms (leggings, capri, shorts) and accessories (hats, towels, face masks) and more.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Karla and Sweaty Girl will be donating a portion of proceeds from the month of October (so hurry up and shop!) to breast cancer awareness charities.

We’ve included some of our favorite styles for working out and athleisure, however, you can browse sweatygirl.com or follow on Instagram (@sweatygirl_kp) to find yours.

Snack Attack: What To Eat When Hunger Strikes

Sure, it’s easy to grab whatever is in sight when hunger strikes but is derailing your health and fitness goals really worth that bag of chips? We suggest reaching for something nutritious that will fuel you throughout your day. Grab an apple or banana (yeah, we get it, not so exciting) or try one of these snack options that we are stocking our pantry (and gym bag) with.

Kate’s Real Food Bars

Kate’s Real Food Bars

With six delicious options (we tried them all), these natural energy bars, which are certified organic, gluten-free, soy-free, non-GMO, and sweetened with organic honey taste great and provide the perfect amount of sustainable, long-lasting energy. These thick, yet chewy granola-like bars are not too sweet, and hit the spot. Our favorite was Stash Peanut Butter Hemp & Flax Seed bar, which is no surprise given our nut addiction. Prefer something even more portable, try their new Snack Bites.

The Paleo Girls Granola

Always looking to support the 305, we are fans of this granola founded by two locals. This grain-free granola is packed with flavor and only natural ingredients including almonds, cashews, shredded coconut, pecans, Brazil nuts, coconut oil, coconut sugar, dates, lemon zest, sea salt. Sprinkle it on top of a smoothie, acai bowl, or just eat it out of the bag.

PB2

Remember our nut addiction, well, yeah, we weren’t kidding. So much so that we can eat PB2 dry, with a spoon. However, when mixed with water as intended, this peanut butter alternative powder is much tastier. For a smoothie loaded with protein, PB2 Performance Peanut Protein delivers 20g of complete plant-based protein and the subtle Dutch Cocoa flavor option has added prebiotic fiber for digestive health. Or try PB2 Pre+Probiotic, that you can mix into a spread, add to smoothies, baked goods or even us for a healthy Honey Peanut Chicken Satay Recipe.

Biena Snacks

These roasted chickpea snacks deliver a crunch with a punch of protein. Available in a variety of flavors ranging from Sea Salt and Habanero, our go-to is the Honey Roasted, which is the perfect mix of sweet and salty.

Try one of these nutritious snack options when hunger strikes without derailing your health and fitness goals.

Lift Off: We Tried A Lash Lift, Here’s What To Expect

Whether or not you’ve learned to smize through your mask or not, it’s time to highlight the feature that is most exposed when you’re covered up, your eyes. There are a multitude of ways to keep your lashes looking long and healthy such as mascara, false lashes, lash extensions, or a treatment known as a Lash Lift. The only service we’ve yet to explore is a Lash Lift so we sought out Miami’s premier lash experts, Lash Society Miami to help us give our lashes some love.

Nestled in The Roads (1110 SW 18th Ave), Lash Society Miami was founded by spa industry veteran, Melina Cespedes, who while living in Los Angeles went to a lashing seminar as a way to step outside the traditional spa industry services at the time. It was love at first lash and lashing became her therapy.

Cespedes moved to Miami five years ago to open Lash Society Miami, which offers the best “lash care” to those in-the-know including many of Miami’s TV news personalities, celebrities, and now you, our Stay Fit 305 readers.

Since we’ve already had our run with lash extensions, and while love them, can’t handle the maintenance, a Keratin Lash Lift and Tint, which in essence is a perm for your lashes, seemed to be the best fit. Cespedes explained the step-by-step process which includes cleaning your lashes and them gently tapping your bottom lashes down. Next, she gently adheres your top lashes to what is called a rod. Don’t be fooled, it’s a small silicone-like piece, not some kind of metal. Your lashes curl around it and then she applies a “perm” solution, followed by a keratin setting solution, which gives you the curl and the lift.

Next, she finishes with a tint in order to give you the darkest lashes. It's quick (we chatted the entire time so it really flew by) and a totally painless process with totally eye-opening, literally and figuratively, results. We were shocked to see the dramatic curl and lift.

The results last 8-12 weeks, which is the natural life cycle of the eyelash. You need to keep your lashes dry for 12-24 hours and the only other post-care is keeping lashes hydrated, with an eye area friendly oil like Castor or Coconut Oil. The treatment costs $120.

In addition to the Keratin Lash Lift and Tint, Lash Society Miami offers Lash Extensions and Eyebrow design. For more information on Lash Society Miami, visit http://www.lashsocietymiami.com and follow @lashsocietymiami on Instagram.

We sought out Miami’s premier lash experts, Lash Society Miami to help us give our lashes some love with a treatment known as a Lash Lift.
